In 1955, Dr. Samuel Dewitt Proctor took over as president of VUU. During his five years of presidency, a new women’s residence hall was built. Newman Hall, currently a residence hall for upperclassmen females, was named after Ora Johnson Newman, a distinguished alumna and educator in the Richmond Public Schools.
Newman Hall has three floors and houses 97 students. There is a lobby area on the first floor, as well as a common area, laundry facilities, and sorority rooms in the basement. This building has community bathrooms. The building is air-conditioned and the rooms in Newman are approximately 9’6” x 13’4”.
