Virginia Union University Announces New Athletic Director

(Richmond, VA) – Virginia Union President Dr. Claude G. Perkins has announced the appointment of Joseph “Joe” Taylor as the university’s new athletic director. Taylor was Virginia Union’s head football coach from 1984 to 1991. During his 40-year career as a football coach, Taylor has also served as head coach at Florida A&M University and Hampton University, where he also served as athletic director.

Taylor holds four Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships and six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships. He has been inducted into both the CIAA Hall of Fame and the Virginia Union University Hall of Fame. He has been selected Coach of the Year by numerous professional organizations, including the Washington, D.C. Pigskin Club, the Norfolk Sports Club, the American Football Coaches Association Conference, Atlanta Touchdown Club, and Richmond Touchdown Club. The All-American Football Foundation honored Taylor with the Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

He completed his undergraduate education at Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education. Taylor also holds a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Eastern Illinois University.
