Dr. Rik van Antwerpen

Dr. van Antwerpen graduated from the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands with a B.S. in Biology, an M.S. in Molecular Cell Biology, and a Ph.D. in Experimental Zoology. From 1989 to 1994, he was a postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry at The University of Arizona. Subsequently, first as a Research Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at The University of Arizona (1994-1998) and later as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University (1998-2007), Dr. van Antwerpen established an independent research program focused on the transport of lipids. Throughout his career, he has been the Principal Investigator of several grants from The National Institutes of Health and The American Heart Association, and has mentored many undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. van Antwerpen has published 30 peer-reviewed papers, and is a Fellow of The American Heart Association. His current research concentrates on the role of plasma lipoproteins in the development of cardiovascular disease.
