The Convocation is named in memory of:
Dr. John M. Ellison

  • Born February 2, 1889 in Northumberland County, Virginia.
  • Educated at the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute (VSU)
  • Transferred to Wayland Academy (Virginia Union University) and Graduated in 1917 with a BA
  • Earned a MA in Theology from Oberlin College in 1927
  • Earned his PhD in Christian Education and Sociology from Drew College in 1933

Presidential Accomplishments

  • First Black President of Virginia Union University (1941-1956)
  • First Alumnus to Serve in this Position
  • Retired a $500,000 debt – 1949 
  • Belgian Building & Bell Tower
  • Restructured the Administration
  • Developed Hovey Stadium and Various Buildings

  • Mentored Young Preachers
  • Edited and Contributed to Religious Journals
  • Published Articles and Journals
  • Pastored Several Churches in Virginia
  • Developed and Supported Black Educators and Clergy through his Active Participation in Various Organizations

THE EVENT

The John Malcus Ellison Convocation is held annually at the Proctor School of Theology during the month of November. We believe that our rich history as an Institution and the stellar contributions of those who have served her over the years, are a testimony to the significance of this celebration. You are invited to join us when scholars, alums, faculty, staff, students, community partners and friends gather in November to celebrate during this event.
